Movie days are a once a week occurrence in our house. Its a way for us to spend time together as a family, huddled on the couch and a way for me to switch off and leave the “business” world behind. I actually really enjoy these times and get really excited when a new children’s movie is due to come out! So here is my list of our top 10 kids movies of all time! Enjoy, and remember to try to take some time out once in a while and just to chill with the family, even if you have paperwork piled up on the desk, dishes in the sink and laundry all over the floor.
1. HOME – 2015
‘When Oh, a loveable misfit from another planet, lands on Earth and finds himself on the run from his own people, he forms an unlikely friendship with an adventurous girl named Tip who is on a quest of her own’. Ok so my son has seriously watched this movie over 100 times since it came out. He has never watched something so much! It is a fast paced movie with some humour, a great soundtrack and bits of action! This has to be #1 on our list of top 10 kids movies of all time!
2. FROZEN – 2013
‘When the newly crowned Queen Elsa accidentally uses her power to turn things into ice to curse her home in infinite winter, her sister, Anna, teams up with a mountain man, his playful reindeer, and a snowman to change the weather condition’. How could we go past this one. Another favorite in our house for the past year! It has action, humour, magical powers and some great catchy songs.. “let it gooooo, let it gooooo…”
3. CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY – 2005
‘When Willy Wonka decides to let five children into his chocolate factory, he decides to release five golden tickets in five separate chocolate bars, causing complete mayhem. The tickets start to be found, with the fifth going to a very special boy, called Charlie Bucket’. Not sure why but this has been a favourite in our house for a long time. I remember loving the original version as a kid too. My son now looks for golden tickets in every chocolate bar we buy!
4. BIG HERO 6 – 2014
‘From Walt Disney Animation Studios, the team behind “Frozen” and “Wreck-It Ralph,” comes “Big Hero 6,” an action-packed comedy-adventure about the special bond that develops between Baymax, a plus-sized inflatable robot, and prodigy Hiro Hamada’. I actually loved this movie too, whats not to love about baymax and a gang of heros? A great storyline with lots of action and a “badie”.
5. ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS – 2007
‘A struggling songwriter named Dave Seville finds success when he comes across a trio of singing chipmunks: mischievous leader Alvin, brainy Simon, and chubby, impressionable Theodore’. This is another of my sons faves that he can watch over and over again and knows most of the words in it. It has action, cool songs and a great family vibe to it.
6. THE ADVENTURES OF PINOCCHIO – 2006
‘One of puppet-maker Geppetto’s creations comes magically to life. This puppet, Pinocchio, has one major desire and that is to become a real boy someday’. The original pinocchio was a hit but when my son saw this one he loved it and has watched it a ton of times ever since. He loves seeing pinocchio turn into a real boy.
7. THE WATER HORSE – 2007
‘A boy finds an interesting egg. His curiosity leads him to protect it and want to figure out what will come out of it. He didn’t realize that it would turn into something magical. The boy and the Water horse grow a strong relationship together in this wonderful story’. We were searching for ‘lost’ eggs for weeks after watching this 🙂 A great original family movie with a nice back story and a cool monster!
8. SONG OF THE SEA – 2014
‘Saoirse, a little girl who can turn into a seal, goes on an adventure with her brother to save the spirit world and other magical beings like her’. This is a beautiful movie full of gorgeous animation and a sad but family orientated storyline. Have the tissues handy!
9. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES – 2014
‘Darkness has settled over New York City as Shredder and his evil Foot Clan have an iron grip on everything from the police to the politicians. The future is grim until four unlikely outcast brothers rise from the sewers and discover their destiny as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. Another favorite of my sons, heaps of action, heros and a bad guy!
10. THE NEVERENDING STORY – 1984
‘Bastian is a young boy who lives a dreary life being tormented by school bullies. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprieter reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. Shortly after, he “borrows” the book and begins to read it in the school attic where he is drawn into the mythical land of Fantasia, which desperately needs a hero to save it from destruction’. I am adding this one in as it was my favourite as a child. The family has watched it and also fallen in love with the magic and wonderful creatures in it.
